Title
Mahnaz Afkhami Interview on Sisterhood is Global on CBC International Hour (video)
Description
(Mahnaz Afkhami, Dave Brindle)
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) International Hour's Dave Brindle interviews Mahnaz Afkhami on the subject of women's rights under Islam and a newly released manual produced by the Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI). Afkhami discusses the discrepancies between Islamic holy texts and the interpretations of those texts regarding women's rights and roles in society. She notes that in many Muslim-majority societies, Islamic texts often have been misinterpreted to justify discrimination against women that is based on cultural rather than religious traditions. The new manual produced by SIGI addresses human rights from within the framework of Islam to enable women to conceptualize their rights from a familiar cultural and religious context.
