Description
(Mahnaz Afkhami)
Mahnaz Afkhami, President and founder of Women's Learning Partnership, discusses the situation of women's rights in Iran, including a peaceful protest for reform of family laws that turned violent when 70 people (including 22 men) were arrested and imprisoned. Afkhami provides an overview of WLP and it's work, and issues that women are fighting for in Iran (such as raising the minimum age of marriage to prevent child marriage.) This discussion is followed by a question and answer session with international callers on the topics of women's leadership, the discrepancy between women's level of education and their legal status in Iran, the manipulation of Islam as a tool to achieve power, and the ethical argument for greater freedom and equality for women.
