Mahnaz Afkhami Interview on Women's Current Status and Struggle for Equal Rights Globally [Part 2] (video)
Description
(Mahnaz Afkhami, Ahmadreza Baharloo)
On the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8, 2006), WLP President and founder Mahnaz Afkhami speaks with Voice of America's Ahmadreza Baharloo on the current status of women globally and the strategies and impediments to achieving rights and equality. This is part 2 (of 2 parts) of the caller question and answer session of the interview.

Afkhami and Baharloo discuss women's rights and women in leadership and activist roles in ancient and recent history, and the perceived conflict of religion with rights. Afkhami stresses the importance of dialogue among people of differing opinions about religion and rights to enable peaceful understanding across differences.

She also speaks about the cultural/religious influence in the penal code in many Muslim majority societies that considers crimes related to family law as personal crimes against the family rather than crimes against the state, which complicates efforts to reform laws regarding women's status.
