In commemoration of International Women's Day, this episode of CNN's Amanpour focuses on the status of women's rights and gender equality globally since 1995. Christiane Amanpour and Basma Al-Khateeb discuss women's widespread mobilization to vote and run as political candidates in the 2010 Iraqi parliamentary elections. Panel participants Mahnaz Afkhami, Asma Khader, and Lina Abou Habib discuss the continuing need for legal reform particularly of family and citizenship laws, the situation of honor killing in Jordan, civil society activism in Iran, women's economic participation and unpaid labor, gender quotas for women's political participation, and Islam in Europe. The participants also speak on the situation of women in Tunisia and whether that country's progressive laws can serve as a model for other Muslim societies seeking greater gender equality.
This interview took place in conjunction with the annual meeting of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City.
