Mahnaz Afkhami is pictured here with her mother, Ferdows, sister, Farah, and niece, Neda. Farah returned to Iran in 1979 when the Ayatollah Khomeini came to power, living with her husband, Faramarz, and daughter, Neda, in Tehran. Following the Revolution, the government imposed more restrictions on citizens private lives , severely rolling back key advancements for women. In 1982, Farah and Neda went into hiding after Faramarz was arrested. Mahnaz was able to call on friends in Iran to help hide Farah and Neda until they were able to secretly cross the border to meet Hamid Ebrahimi – Mahnaz and Farah’s brother – and secure travel to the United Sates where Mahnaz and Gholam met them.
