When the Islamic Revolution of 1979 began, Afkhami was in New York, United States, negotiating an agreement between Iran and the United Nation to establish the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW). Afkhami was charged in absentia with "corruption on earth and warring with god".
