In this short interview, Thoraya Obaid speaks about the work of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in conflict situations, humanitarian crises, natural disasters, domestic violence. Aim of supporting women, prevention, establishing psychosocial support and health services in aftermath of rape and HIV/AIDS. Discusses brutality in refugee camps. Describes examples of successful advocacy campaigns for anti-rape legislation, including campaign led by midwife in Mauritania, positive male participation. Discusses need for link between laws at national level and violence at community level. Discusses best practices at community level, linking empowerment with culture change, need to access cultural values that are positive to bring change in line with human rights. Discusses misunderstandings relating to acceptance of cultural, highlights culture as dynamic force for change. Congratulatory remarks on Women's Learning Partnership's 10th anniversary.
