About the Interviewee*
Jacqueline Pitanguy (Brazil), a sociologist, is the Founder and Executive Director of Cidadania, Estudo, Pesquisa, Informação e Ação (CEPIA) and the former President of the National Council for Women’s Rights. She is member of the Board of the Brazil Fund for Human Rights and of the Commission on Citizenship and Reproduction. She is a member and consulted expert of the Brazilian Commission on Population and Development and the National Council for the Rights of Women. She was a member of the World Movement for Democracy Steering Committee and the Carter Center’s International Human Rights Council, and she served on the boards of several international organizations, including the Society for International Development, Inter-American Dialogue and Action AID Brazil. She was also the Chair of the Board of the Global Fund for Women.

Pitanguy is on the editorial board of several journals, has published and co-authored numerous articles and books. She was awarded the Medal of Rio Branco, the highest decoration of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was one of 1,000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
